Setting up an external monitor - Thinkpad T41 with RHEL4

How top setup T41 to use external monitor.

Previously used “sytem-config-diaplay”
this caused problems where login at X would log staight back out again.

Ran “aticonfig --initial=dual-head --screen-layout=left” and so am now using proprietary ATI drivers.
“sytem-config-diaplay” will no longer work as the ati drivers are now in force.

The external monitor now shows “Input signal out of range”.

Running the command “xrandr -s 1024x768” changes the resolution and the external screen displays properly.

Running the command “xrandr -s 1400x1050” changes the resolution back again and the external screen shuts off.

Now the external screen is working as a second screen - where I want a clone for presenting.
Run "aticonfig --desktop-setup=clone --overlay-on=1"

Red Hat Login problem

In a moment of genius I enabled dual head monitors on a Thinkpad T41 running RHEL4 and found that each login took me straight back to the login prompt (gnome).

When I booted to init 3 and ran system-config-display I was able to deselect the dual head option.

Saved the day - woohoo!
